Yes — and we recommend annual sweeping for coastal properties even on light-use fireplaces. Salt-laden air accelerates corrosion of cowls and metal liners, and partial blockages from gull and pigeon nests are more common than inland. We carry replacement cowls where the existing one is obviously corroded.

What about the older terraces around Hendon and Pallion?

These are some of our most frequent jobs. Most are unlined brick flues serving open fires that have been adapted for multi-fuel stoves at some point. We're close to the coast at Whitburn — does sea air matter?

It does. Properties on the seaward side of Cleadon and out toward Whitburn get salt-laden easterly wind, which corrodes cowls and metal liners faster than inland and breaks down the mortar around pots. We check the stack visually on every visit and will tell you plainly if a cowl or flaunching is nearing the end of its life — no pressure, just a heads-up so it isn't a surprise.
